What is Pro-Nox?
Pro-Nox is a blend of 50% oxygen and 50% nitrous oxide gas that’s used to help relieve pain and anxiety. Oxygen is usually recognized as safe right away—after all it’s something we breathe in every day of our lives. But you can feel confident knowing that nitrous oxide is safe too. This is more commonly known as “laughing gas” and has been used in dental procedures as a sedative for many years.
During your procedure, you hold a disposable mouthpiece with a hose that administers the gas through a valve as you inhale. This puts you in complete control over how much is used during the procedure. The calming and pain-reducing effects are felt almost instantaneously.
How long does Pro-Nox last?
The effects of using the Pro-Nox system wear off in 5-10 minutes. Since you hold the mouthpiece used for inhalation, you can decide when you want to use more. You’re in complete control of your pain/anxiety relief and still remain alert throughout your entire appointment.
Can you drive after Pro-Nox treatments?
One of the greatest benefits of the short-term effects of the Pro-Nox treatment is that you’re fully capable of driving after the procedure. This means you typically don’t have to worry about figuring out alternate transportation or waiting for effects to wear off before you can drive home. But everyone is different, so use your best judgment after using Pro-Nox. In the debate of Pro-Nox vs. sedatives, Pro-Nox is certainly superior when it comes to being able to function afterwards. If you want absolute minimal disruption to your day, this is likely the best option.
What are the Pro-Nox side effects?
Like any medical treatment, there are a few minor side effects you may experience. While some people don’t experience any, others have felt short-term side effects of dizziness, nausea, light-headedness, and unsteadiness.
Is Pro-Nox covered by insurance?
Pro-Nox is an out-of-pocket expense. However, the additional cost to add it to your procedure is minimal. Please ask about it during your consultation to learn more information and get specific pricing information.
Should everyone use Pro-Nox?
While Pro-Nox is useful for pain management and anxiety relief, it’s not a viable option for everyone. There are a select few groups of people who won’t be able to make use of it. Patients with anemia, vitamin B12 deficiency, or extreme chronic fatigue should avoid it, along with women in their first trimester of pregnancy.
Caution should also be considered for patients with nasal obstruction, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, active cystic fibrosis, recent tympanic membrane surgery, and claustrophobia. You will be able to determine if this treatment is the right fit for you during your consultation.
